Parvo Vaccine for Dogs
Parvovirus (parvo) is one of the most dangerous diseases an unvaccinated puppy can catch — highly contagious, able to survive in the environment for months, and often fatal without treatment. The good news is that vaccination for parvovirus is extremely effective, and every puppy already gets it as part of their core DHPP shots. If you need the exact dates for your own puppy, the puppy vaccine schedule calculator will map the whole series to your puppy's birth date.

This page is for general education only, based on published AAHA core vaccine guidelines, and isn't a substitute for personalized veterinary advice. Timing can vary by puppy, region, and vet protocol — always confirm your dog's exact schedule with your veterinarian.
What Is the Parvo Vaccine Called?
There isn't a separate “parvo shot” most puppies get on its own — parvo protection comes bundled into a combination vaccine along with distemper, hepatitis, and parainfluenza. Depending on your vet or the manufacturer, you might see it called DHPP, DAPP, DHLPP, or a “5-in-1” shot. All of them include parvovirus protection.
Is parvo part of the DHPP vaccine?
Yes. Parvo is almost never given as its own standalone shot — it's the second "P" in DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus), sometimes sold as DAPP or DHLPP. If your vet's paperwork says DHPP, your puppy is already getting parvo protection as part of that combination vaccine.
Puppy Parvo Shot Schedule
Because parvo protection rides along with the DHPP series, the schedule is the same: three doses given about 3–4 weeks apart, starting between 6 and 8 weeks of age and finishing between 14 and 16 weeks.

How many parvo shots does a puppy need?
The same three doses as the DHPP series it's part of: the first at 6–8 weeks, a second at 10–12 weeks, and a third (final) dose at 14–16 weeks. Parvovirus is one of the reasons vets are strict about finishing this series — a puppy isn't reliably protected until after the last dose.
Can a puppy still get parvo after shots?
It's possible but uncommon. Protection builds with each dose in the series, and maternal antibodies can interfere with early doses, which is exactly why the series is spread across three shots instead of one. Until your puppy has finished all three doses, vets recommend limiting exposure to unvaccinated dogs, dog parks, and other public areas where parvovirus can linger in the environment.
Parvo Boosters for Adult Dogs
Parvo boosters follow the same schedule as the rest of the DHPP combination — see the annual dog injections page for the full adult booster timeline.
How long does the parvo vaccine last?
After the puppy series and a booster at 12–16 months, most vets follow AAHA guidance and re-vaccinate for parvo (as part of the DHPP core combination) every 3 years. Some clinics use an annual booster instead, depending on their protocol — ask your vet which interval they follow.
